Mazda Key Fob Battery Replacement

Almost every new Mazda on the Santa Fe roads today uses convenient remote start, push button start, and keyless entry technology. While this eliminates the need to constantly be using your key to unlock and start your vehicle, it can cause some problems if the key fob stops working. If you try to unlock your car or start up the engine and find that you can’t, the battery in your key fob might need to be replaced. To replace a dead Mazda key fob battery, you’ll need the following:

1. A replacement battery on hand (CR2025 battery)
2. Your Mazda key fob
3. A small flat head screwdriver with the head wrapped in tape to prevent scratches

How to Open a Mazda Key Fob

The first thing you need to know is how to open a Mazda key fob. Luckily, the process is pretty much the same for any new or recent Mazda vehicle, so you can apply these steps to just about any Mazda model in the Los Alamos area today. Here’s what to do:

1. Remove the metal auxiliary key by pushing the button on the back of your key fob.
2. Once you’ve removed the auxiliary key, you’ll notice a slot on either side of the key fob case.
3. Use your screwdriver to gently pry open the key fob case, working on one side first and then the other.
4. Put the case in an easily-visible spot where you won’t lose track of it. Now that you’ve opened up the key fob, it’s time to replace the battery.

How to Change a Mazda Key Fob Battery

1. Remove the battery cap and set it next to the key fob base. This could fully expose the key fob battery.
2. Carefully remove the battery, making sure you don’t damage the small rubber ring that it’s sitting on. If you end up accidentally scratching or damaging the rubber ring, be sure to replace it before moving on.
3. Take the replacement battery and slip it into the key fob, with the positive side (+) facing up.
4. Replace the battery cover and reattach both sides of the key fob case. Press gently until you hear them click into place, and you’re all set!
