How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Mechanic with Tires

One of the most important aspects of vehicle maintenance is tire rotation. So, how often should you rotate your tires? On average, you should rotate your tires every 5,000-7,000 miles. However, this is only a general rule, and you should always consult your owner’s manual to be sure. So, do you want to know more about when and how to rotate tires? Learn more about tire rotation and general tire maintenance with the experts at the Enchanted Mazda service center in Santa Fe!

How to Rotate Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

Front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive designates where the engine sends the power. On a front-wheel drive vehicle, the power is sent directly to the front wheels, causing them to wear quicker. Similarly, on a RWD vehicle, the power is sent directly from the engine to the rear wheels, causing more tire wear. If you drive a FWD or RWD vehicle, follow these tips to determine when to rotate tires:

  • On average, a FWD or RWD car should have their tires rotated every 5,000-7,000 miles. However, you should always consult your owner’s manual to be sure.
  • If you own a FWD vehicle and want to perform the tire rotation yourself, be sure to change sides when you move the rear tires to the front. For example, the right rear tire should go to the left front. When you move the front tires to the back, however, keep them on the same side.
  • If you have a RWD car, it is the same process just done the opposite way. You would change sides when moving the two front tires to the back of the vehicle and keep the front tires on the same side.
  • It is important to note that how quick your tires wear is directly related to your driving habits. For example, if you often drive on rough or unpaved roads, you may have to rotate your tires more frequently. Tips for AWD Tire Rotation

The tire rotation process is different for all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, as your tires will wear differently compared to a FWD or RWD vehicle. This is due to the power from the engine going to each wheel separately, made possible by differentials. Therefore, AWD vehicles should have their tires rotated more frequently, usually every 3,000-5,000 miles. Here are some tips if you want to rotate your tires right in your Los Alamos driveway:

  1. Left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. Right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. Right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. Left front goes to the right rear spot.

You can also draw a diagram of your drivetrain to make the process easier, using arrows that are color-coded to help you track where to move your tires. If you don’t want to rotate your tires on your own, you could always schedule a service appointment at Enchanted Mazda!

Why Should You Rotate Your Tires?
